TOTP code not working? Check these five things
A rejected code usually needs a small check rather than a new setup. Work through these steps in order, keeping the service’s sign-in screen open.
1. Check the account
Make sure the key belongs to the exact account and service you are signing in to. Personal and work accounts can have similar labels. An old setup key can also keep generating numbers after the account has been configured with a new one.
2. Turn on automatic time
TOTP uses your device’s clock. In your operating system’s date and time settings, enable automatic time and let it synchronize. Return to the authenticator and wait for the next interval. Refreshing the page alone does not correct the device clock.
3. Copy the complete setup key
Paste the Base32 key from the original setup. Look for accidentally missing characters or a copied label. 2FAOrbit accepts spaces and hyphens in plain keys, but a six-digit sign-in code is not a setup key.
4. Match the service settings
Open Advanced settings and check the algorithm, digit count and period. A standard setup link can provide these automatically. Use the setup link inspector if you want to read what the link specifies.
5. Use a fresh code once
Wait until the orbit starts a new interval, copy the new code and submit it promptly. Some services reject a code that has already been accepted. If the account still rejects it, use that service’s backup codes or recovery process. Generating more codes cannot recover a missing setup key.
